Tesla has identified that a small number of Powerwall 2 batteries (about 1% worldwide, sold between November 2020 and June 2022) may not perform as intended due to a batch of battery cells from a third-party supplier.
To put customers first, Tesla has already remotely powered down affected units to make sure they remain safe.
Your solar system continues to operate as normal, but your Powerwall may temporarily show “Low Energy Lockout” in the Tesla App if your unit is affected.
What This Means For You
Tesla is replacing all affected Powerwall 2 batteries free of charge.

Most customers will receive a brand-new Tesla Powerwall 3, which offers extra features and improved performance.

Homes with more than one Powerwall 2 may receive a like-for-like replacement to ensure everything works together, though upgrades are sometimes possible.

You don’t need to do anything — Tesla or our team will be in touch to arrange the replacement at a time that suits you.

Will My Solar System Still Work?
Yes — your solar panels will continue generating energy as normal. The only change is that your Powerwall won’t store energy until the replacement is installed.
Do I Need To Pay For The Replacement?
No. Tesla is covering the full cost of replacement.
Has Anyone Been Harmed?
No injuries have been reported. A handful of units worldwide experienced overheating, but Tesla acted quickly to prevent risk.
What Will Happen To My Old Unit?
Tesla will safely collect and recycle the unit in their workshop.
Can I Use This Opportunity To Upgrade My System?
