What’s New In Powerwall 3
Built-In Solar Power Inverter
The biggest difference from Powerwall 2 is the built-in solar inverter in Powerwall 3. There’s an AC-coupled option for retrofits if you already have a solar PV system with an inverter, but for new installs, the integrated inverter means the system is DC-coupled. This means one less piece of hardware is needed when getting a solar and battery system, making installation more efficient and cost-effective. It also boasts an impressive 97.5% solar-to-grid efficiency.
Increased Power Output
While Powerwall 3 has the same 13.5 kWh of energy storage as Powerwall 2, the game-changer is its power output. Powerwall 3 can deliver up to 11.04 kW—double the output of Powerwall 2. At peak times during the day when you’re using lots of power, Powerwall 3 allows you to run more appliances simultaneously. In most cases it has the storage capacity and efficiency to provide backup power to an entire home.
Active Thermal Management
Powerwall already had some of the best thermal management of any home battery, and this has been improved for Powerwall 3 to enhance performance and efficiency. Importantly for us in New Zealand, its performance at colder temperatures will be improved, so you can expect better results on those frosty winter mornings.
